HEATHERCOMBE SCULPTURE TRAIL

SEPTEMBER 2009

The EDGE Exhibition was the first of our annual sculpture events sited in the beautiful Fairy Wood at Heathercombe, Manaton. The Trail is run in partnership by the High Heathercombe Centre and Heathercombe Woodlands Trust.

The theme for the 2009 Trail was the Permaculture principle of ‘increasing edge’ Essentially a celebration of diversity and an exploration of the arts/nature overlap.

The exhibition represented work from all parts of the community with professional artists showing alongside work from various community groups.

The EDGE was formally opened by Mr. Bill Hitchins, chairman of Dartmoor National Park. The opening day included an information sharing and networking event with representatives from Bovey Climate Action, Transition Town Newton Abbot, the Permaculture Association and local low impact living initiatives, Landmatters Permaculture Project and Steward Woodland.
There were fabulous theatre pieces throughout the day contributed by MED Theatre and D:volution.
Satish Kumar, writer, teacher and longstanding editor of Resurgence Magazine, spoke inspiringly on the art of living, and the need for a more eco-centric arts focus.

During the EDGE the trail and gardens were visited by nearly six hundred people.

From our visitors book……..

“ a walking poem of nature and humankind’

“ wonderful magical place. So much talent on display”

“this has been a much needed piece of heaven that we did not even know was here. The sculptures and their placing within the landscape was real art in conversation with nature. We go home nourished….. thank you!”

“Alice in wonderland meets Kew – Wonderful.”
